Register and Municipal Heritage Committee (s.27-s.28)

Section 27 of the Act requires municipalities to keep a register of properties that are of cultural heritage value or interest. The register:

(i) shall include all properties that have been designated under Part IV to be of cultural heritage value or interest [see s.27(1.1) and designation processes set out in s.29 (municipal designation) and s.34.5-34.6 (Minister designation)]; and

(ii) may include properties that have not been designated but are believed by municipal council to be of cultural heritage value or interest [see s.27(1.2)].

The properties that have not been designated under Part IV but are included in the register under s.27(1.2) are commonly referred to as “listed” properties.  The distinction between properties designated under Part IV and "listed" properties are provided in a summary table.

Section 28 of the Act allows municipalities to establish municipal heritage committees to advise and assist council on heritage matters.
